Bed bugs were eradicated about 80 years ago, but there has now been a resurgence, attributed to new aspects of pest biology, such as resistance to insecticides. Although hygiene is considered the main factor to control them, recently it has been observed that sometimes it is not enough, as they have appeared in hospitals, nursing homes, cruise ships and airplanes, among other public places. Experts indicate that changes in human behavior, such as global travel, could be another factor that has driven its reappearance.

What are bed bugs?

The so-called bed bugs are of two species: C. Hemipterus and Cimex lectularius. These are ectoparasitic insects about 5 mm long, reddish-brown in color, that feed on human or animal blood.

While biting, the bedbug injects saliva to prevent blood from clotting, which can cause everything from simple injuries to severe allergic reactions. The lesions are large welts (greater than 1 cm) with a central dark red spot, accompanied by itching and inflammation.

Generally, scratching bed bug bites causes wounds, which can become infected and aggravated. They are not known to spread any pathogens, but they often make it difficult to sleep and affect mood.

How to detect bed bugs?

If bites appear, it is necessary to look for evidence of the presence of the insect. Bed bugs can be found in mattresses, bedding, under rugs, or in cracks in furniture and walls.

When they shed their skin, they leave behind a light yellow, empty exoskeleton that is easy to spot. There may also be dark stains of droppings in hiding places, eggs, or small blood stains on the sheets. It is important to know that the symptoms can appear up to the ninth day and that it is difficult to distinguish the welts from the bites of other insects.

What insecticides kill bed bugs?

The recommendation to combat bedbugs is to avoid the use of household insecticides, which can spread the insects and worsen the situation. It is also advised not to use harsh insecticides on the litter, but to use mechanical methods such as vacuuming, deep hygiene and sealing cracks in furniture and walls.

For severe cases, pesticides can be used, taking the necessary precautions to ventilate and let the product dry well before using the bedroom. Among the available pesticides, boric acid, pyrethrins, pyrroles and pyrethroids can be used, as well as neem oil and insect growth regulators.
