The washing machine is a key pillar in household chores. It allows you to save time and effort to have clean clothes, but perhaps you did not know that it can be used for much more than to remove dirt from your clothes. Curtains, duvets, toys... are just a few examples of other things that can be washed in this appliance. However, to avoid accidents it is important to pay attention to the precautions indicated on the product label. And of course having a washing machine with the right programs. The OCU collects in a report which items can be put into the drum, and possibly more than one will surprise you.

pet toys and accessories

According to the Organization of Consumers and Users, you can put the leashes and collars in the washing machine if they are made of nylon and the plastic toys. You can also wash your bed: try to first remove the hairs with a sticky roller or a brush, remove the cover and wash it on a program suitable for the material. If the cover is made of cotton, you can wash it hot.

hair accessories

Hair accessories are often filled with oil from the scalp, due to the use of lacquers, conditioners or gels…. They can be put in the washing machine too, but in this case it is better to do it inside a bag for delicate garments to avoid possible losses.

Bath, car and play mats

It is also possible to wash the bath mats in the washing machine, using a cold water program and a short spin. The same happens with the cotton ones that are usually placed at the foot of the bed, although in this case it will be preferable to resort to a delicate program with cold water.

And here comes a surprise for many, surely: the washing machine also accepts fabric car mats, for which a short program in cold water is recommended. Before you have to shake them well and vacuum them to remove dust and dirt.

If you have puzzle-type rugs at home on which the little ones play, they can also be washed by disassembling the pieces and putting them in the washing machine with a cold water program.

pillows and cushions

Pillows, both feather and synthetic, accumulate unsightly yellowish stains due to sweat and saliva. You can put them in the washing machine, but you should make sure to use a strong spin and then let them dry well in the open air, fluffing them from time to time. This will prevent the formation of mold. This same procedure is valid for the fillings of the cushions.

reusable bags

Reusable cloth bags, currently so popular, should be washed at least a couple of times a week to eliminate odours, especially if you use them to carry fruit, vegetables, meat, fish... The isothermal bags in which we carry food to work can also go in the washing machine.

shower curtains

Curtains tend to accumulate mold, as well as traces of soap, creams or conditioners. Textiles can be washed in the washing machine at 30 ºC, plastic ones better in cold water. In both cases, choose a short program without spin. When you have finished washing, again hang them flat to dry.

Nordic quilts and fillings

If your washing machine has a large capacity drum, you can wash the duvets at home, for which it is recommended to use a delicate program. For feather ones, a 30º and normal spin (800 or 1,000 revolutions) is better, while for synthetic ones it is better to wash them at 45º and at higher revolutions: 1,200.

gym mats

It depends on the material in which they are made, but some can be put in the washing machine with a cold water program or delicate garments, neutral soap and without spinning. To get rid of doubts, the logical thing is to look at the label to avoid possible 'accidents'.

mops and mops

The tools we use to clean also have to be washed. The mops and mops can be put in the washing machine without problem with hot water to remove all the dirt.

oven mitts

The gloves with which we take the trays out of the oven, both the cloth ones and the silicone ones, can be put in the washing machine at a high temperature to remove any traces of fat, since most of them are resistant enough to withstand high temperatures, but it is always I recommend looking at the label. If they do not have a label, it is preferable to wash them by hand.

Backpacks

Backpacks are often on the floor and also rub against types of surfaces, so if you want to clean them thoroughly, they should be put in the washing machine. Before starting it, it is key to look at the label, which is likely to recommend washing in cold water: It is preferable that the spin is not too fast to avoid deformation.

Construction pieces and Lego

You can wash them together with your normal laundry, but put all the pieces in a mesh bag before putting them in the drum.

Teddies

Children's stuffed animals usually store dust and even food scraps. To clean them, you can put them in the washing machine on a delicate program with a little detergent and cold water. It is preferable to put them in a mesh bag or in a pillowcase.

Before putting them in the drum, check first if they have any electronic component or batteries: if so, you will not be able to wash them in the machine. If you notice any unsewn seams, close them first so that the stuffing does not escape.

Textile and sports shoes

To wash them, first remove the laces, which you can wash with normal laundry. If possible, remove the templates, as it is better to wash them by hand. If the shoes have stains, rub them with a brush and neutral soap. Then, put them in a mesh bag, put them in the drum and select a gentle program without spinning with cold water to prevent them from shrinking.

And what you shouldn't machine wash...

There are some fabrics that lose their properties if they are washed in the washing machine, so it is preferable not to put them or do it with great caution:

-Goretex garments and other technical fabrics.

-Raincoats and waterproof garments (Barbour type and similar).

-Safety elements such as straps and harnesses.
