AUSTIN, Texas-Officials with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services are asking parents and caregivers to make sure they that children stay safe while they sleep as temperatures dip below freezing across the central state this week.

“Texas typically sees the highest number of deaths related to unsafe sleeping environments between December and February of each year. Often these deaths involve children becoming entangled in blankets or bedding, or sleeping with their parents," the department's statement read.

What can parents do to protect their children?

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services urged parents to try to regulate their child's sleeping environment as much as possible, making sure the room has adequate heating and There are no pillows or blankets in the crib that could present a hazard.

“Safe sleep means making sure babies can breathe during bedtime and nap time. Babies should always sleep in their cribs in a cool room. They should be alone in their crib, but preferably in the same room as their caregiver, and on their backs, rather than their sides or stomachs," the statement read.

Since 2016, the department has investigated 981 infant deaths in which bed-sharing was a factor. For the past year, at least 165 babies died for this reason.

“It can happen to anyone. Whether you have a newborn, a 1 year old, or a child closer to 2 years old. It really can happen to anyone…it only takes a couple of minutes for something bad to happen,” said Child Protective Services investigator Katherine DeTemple.

DeTemple reminded that for their safety, babies should sleep alone, on their backs, in a crib and in a smoke-free environment.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the first winter storm watch of the season for the arrival of a cold front that will leave freezing temperatures and the possibility of sleet in the zone.

Most areas will see only a mix of rain, freezing rain, and sleet early Thursday, as well as freezing temperatures overnight.
