NEW YORK – Amazon first competed with malls, and now it's moving inside one.
The online sales space announced today, Thursday, its plans to operate a clothing store in a shopping center located in the southern area of the state of California this year. This represents the most recent move of the company that sold 10% of the total clothing shipped in the United States.
The store, which will stock women's and men's clothing, as well as shoes and other accessories, will open at Americana at Brand in the city of Glendale.
Amazon's move could pose a new threat to traditional clothing businesses because of the insights into customer behavior the company could generate with the store, experts say.
Amazon said its algorithms will present recommendations in real time as customers scan items. In addition, people will be able to complete an online survey about their style preferences.
It was indicated that in the Amazon store, people will be able to scan a QR code of each piece to see what sizes are available, the colors and the ratings given by other customers. Similarly, they may request that the selected piece arrives at the dressing area or the collection office.

The store will be approximately 30,000 square feet, similar to a store like Kohl's, but one-third the size of a department store like Macy's, but will offer twice as many styles as traditional stores because only one piece of each model will be on display. , while the rest will be stored.
The director of Amazon Style, Somoina Vasen, did not offer details of the store's initial sales estimates, nor a precise date of its opening.
Last year, Amazon overtook Walmart as the top-selling online clothing business during the pandemic. The company launched its own brands and a space exclusively dedicated to this market in 2020.
The director of the GlobalData Retail portal, Neil Saunders, believed that this store could expand Amazon's role in the clothing sales market and have a great impact on the sector of people who prefer the experience of exploring in a physical space.
However, Saunders cautioned that success will depend on execution.
