The new UN report published this Monday on climate change has left us shivering after the harsh conclusions that have been reached. The study, analyzed by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), ensures that global warming has reached its most critical point.
This alarming document, and the most complete to date, blames human activity for what happened and states that changes in the climate will be irreversible for "hundreds or thousands of years", stating that we do not have time to avoid climate change dangerous.
Its general secretary, Antonio Guterres, has been in charge of warning that we are facing a "red code for humanity" and assures that it is necessary to take measures immediately. It specifically warns that the global average temperature has already risen 1.1 degrees Celsius (above "pre-industrial levels").
According to the study, global warming has reached a critical point forcing deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions to avert dangerous climate change that could breach a key global temperature limit within a decade. They also state that intense rainfall and droughts will occur more frequently. In addition, they do not rule out a rise in sea level, which could approach 2 meters by the end of this century.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was created in 1988 to facilitate comprehensive assessments of the state of scientific, technical, and socioeconomic knowledge on climate change, its causes, potential impacts, and response strategies.
"The findings of this report and the advances it reflects in climate science provide an invaluable contribution to climate-related negotiations and decision-making," said Hoesung Lee, chairman of the group, which was formed in turn. by hundreds of the world's leading climate scientists.
